We shared some great stories and flannel rhymes about finding, cooking and eating food!  Well it wasn’t just about food!  The books we read taught us about sharing, doing great things (even when you are small), and guarding against false assumptions.  Sound deep?  Yes, it was!  But it was also fun!

Here are the books, songs, flannel boards, action rhymes and video we shared.

Books We Read

In Morris Mole by Dan Yaccarino, we meet a mole who isn’t at all like his brothers; he dresses differently, is not as loud and is much, much tinier.  That doesn’t mean Morris can’t make a difference.  When his BIG brothers decide to dig deeper to get more food, Morris gets the bright idea that they should dig higher.  No one hears his idea, but he gathers up the courage to go it alone!  When he emerges from the dirt, he sees a world full of food choices and other beautiful things.  He also runs into a dangerous fox but he solves that problem too.  A great story that teaches little ones that they are never too small to make an impact.

The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog by Mo Willems is funny and imparts a great message about sharing.  The pigeon finds a scrumptious hot dog and can’t wait to eat it.  There’s just one obstacle, a little duckling who asks way too many questions.  Of course we see the duckling try to guilt the Pigeon into sharing his meal…do you think it worked? Read the story to find out!

Chicken Soup by Joan van Leeuwen teaches us that we shouldn’t always assume the worst! When the farm animals begin whispering to each other the message gets a little convoluted.  By the time the chickens hear it, they’ve come to the conclusion that the farmer is looking for live chickens to make chicken soup.  YIKES!  All of the chickens run to hide.  However, little chick has a cold in his beak and he lags behind.  One too many sneezes take him right into the hands of the farmer.  Don’t worry though, there is a happy ending!  The farmer’s wife just wanted to serve her little chick some “vegetable” soup so he’d feel better.

Itsy Bitsy Spider

The itsy bitsy spider
Went up the water spout
Down came the rain and
Washed the spider out
Out came the sun
And dried up all the rain
Now the itsy bitsy spider
Went up the spout again

You are my Sunshine

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You’ll never know dear, how much I love you
And I love you more every day.
