Our summer session of Infant Storytime is underway.  Each week you’ll find a blog post that covers the books, rhymes, songs, tickle, bounces, flannel stories, fingerplays and puppets we shared.  I also throw in some information about the benefits of reading, singing and talking to your baby!

For our fourth storytime of the session we enjoyed learning about colors!  Below you’ll find a record of everything we shared!

FUN FACT:  Did you know there are many different ways children learn?  Some learn best through songs and rhymes; others through illustrations and print in books; and still others learn best through tactile experiences such as touch, smell and movement.  Since we talked about colors during our fourth storytime, I thought it would be helpful to include this handout aptly titled:  Helping Children Learn to Recognize Colors.

We waved our colorful scarves to this song during storytime.  Sing it at home with your baby – you can point out the different colors as you sing together.  This video clip will give you the tune and words to the song.

BOOKS WE SHARED

Circles by Yusuke Yonezu is deceptively simple.  Although limited in text it teaches children basic colors and introduces them to the concepts of shape (circle) and size (big & little).  It also shows how circle shapes can be found in everyday objects.  The book begins with the question:  “What can a big red circle be?”  Why a balloon or an apple!  “What can a yellow circle make?” The sun or an egg!  Two blue circles can make wheels or glasses and so on.  We finally end with four little black circles.   (Look at the flannel below to guess where they might be found!)

Flannel Board used with the book, Circles:

In Edward Gibbs’ I Spy With My Little Eye, we are introduced to many “colorful” creatures.  The peephole shows us a hint of color but it isn’t until we turn the page that we see the matching animal.  Such a great book for babies and toddlers – the illustrations are huge, the colors vivid and the guessing game throughout keeps little ones engaged and thinking.  Also a wonderful book to teach colors and animal identification.  You can use the book to make the animal sounds as well.  Another fun way to bond and get your infant ready for reading.

New Bounce We Shared

Listen to Acka Backa Soda Cracker, a new, rhyming bounce we shared during storytime.  This video and others like it can be found at the Jbrary website.  Watch the video and try the bounce at home with your baby!  It’s a wonderful way to bond and play together.

Action Songs, Flannels, Rhymes & Bounces We Shared

We share a lot of songs, bounces & rhymes during storytime!  You’ll find lyrics/words to most of the bounces, songs & rhymes we shared.

Welcome Song
(to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)

Welcome, welcome everyone,
Now we’re here let’s have some fun!
First we clap our hands just so,
Then we bend and touch our toes.
Welcome, welcome everyone,
Now we’re here let’s have some fun!

Clap Everybody and Say Hello! (see “CDs section” below to find this song in our CD collection)

Clap everybody and say hello, clap everybody and say hello, clap everybody and say hello, no matter what the weather

The Grand Old Duke of York (bounce)

Video:  The Grand Old Duke of York

Oh, the grand old Duke of York,
He had ten thousand men;
He marched them up to the top of the hill
And he marched them down again.
When they were up, they were up,
And when they were down, they were down,
And when they were only halfway up,
They were neither up nor down.

Peas Porridge Hot! (nursery rhyme)

Peas porridge hot
Peas porridge cold
Peas porridge in the pot, nine days old!
Some like it hot
Some like it cold
Some like it in the pot, nine days old!

With my little hands I go clap, clap, clap, (clap baby’s hands)
With my little feet I go tap, tap, tap. (tap baby’s feet)
With my little arms I wave bye, bye, bye, (gently lift baby’s arm to wave bye)
With my little legs I kick high, high, high! (help lift baby’s legs)
With my little eyes I say peekaboo, (cover baby’s eyes and play peekaboo)
With my little lips I say I love you! (look at baby and say I love you)

REPEAT but change the last line to…”sing I love you! (sing I love you to baby)
