For our fifth storytime of the winter session we read stories about colors!  What follows are the books, rhymes, songs, tickle, bounces and nursery flannel board we shared.

Fun Fact:

Just after birth, a baby sees only in black and white, with shades of gray. As the months go by, he/she will slowly start to develop his color vision at around 4 months.  [Credit:  WebMD]

BOOKS WE SHARED

In Colors pop-up Peekaboo! published by D.K. Kindersley, each page brings a lift-the-flap peekaboo surprise!  This is an interactive book that teaches colors and animal identification.  A yellow duck, a red bird, a blue fish, a green turtle and a rainbow butterfly emerge in 3-D as each flap is lifted up.  All babies love playing peekaboo and this book takes this simple game to another level!

Black Bird Yellow Sun by Steve Light is a board book that contrasts a simple black bird against things in nature that are bursting with color.  We have the black bird against the backdrop of a “yellow sun, orange leaves, purple grapes, green grass” and more.  Clear & simple visuals, bright colors and the appearance of the same bird on each page make this an easy book for infants to follow.

We sang the book What a Wonderful World together.  The book is based on the song by Bob Thiele & George David Weiss as sung by Louis Armstrong.  Thought you might enjoy a different version of this song by Hawaiian ukulele player and singer, Israel.  In the video clip below he sings Somewhere Over the Rainbow to the tune of What a Wonderful World.

Flannel Rhymes We Shared

    Little Boy Blue

The version from 1912:
Little Boy Blue,
Come blow your horn;
The sheep’s in the meadow,
The cow’s in the corn.
Where’s the little boy
That looks after the sheep?
He’s under the hay-cock,
fast a-sleep.
Will you wake him?
No, not I;
For if I do,
he’ll be sure to cry.

Action Songs, Rhymes & Bounces We Shared

We share a lot of songs, bounces & rhymes during storytime!
You’ll find lyrics/words to those songs & rhymes we shared without CD accompaniment here.

Welcome Song
(to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)

Welcome, welcome everyone,
Now we’re here let’s have some fun!
First we clap our hands just so,
Then we bend and touch our toes.
Welcome, welcome everyone,
Now we’re here let’s have some fun!

Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

Video:  Twinkle Twinkle

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
How I wonder what you are
Up above the world so high
Like a diamond in the sky
Twinkle Twinkle little star
How I wonder what you are.

Dickery Dickery Dare (bounce)

Video:  Dickery Dickery Dare

Dickery dickery dare,
The pig flew up in the air –
Wooooo!
The man in brown,
Brought him back down,
Dickery dickery dare!

The Grand Old Duke of York (bounce)

Video:  The Grand Old Duke of York

Oh, the grand old Duke of York,
He had ten thousand men;
He marched them up to the top of the hill
And he marched them down again.
When they were up, they were up,
And when they were down, they were down,
And when they were only halfway up,
They were neither up nor down.

Peas Porridge Hot! (nursery rhyme)

Video:  Peas Porridge Hot

Peas porridge hot
Peas porridge cold
Peas porridge in the pot, nine days old!
Some like it hot
Some like it cold
Some like it in the pot, nine days old!

Tickle: Round and round the garden, goes the Teddy Bear, a one-step, a two-step, a tickle under there.

Goodbye Friends (song in sign)

Click here for video:  Goodbye Babies (Friends)

Goodbye babies, goodbye babies
