For our sixth  storytime of the winter session we read stories about cars and trucks!

FUN FACT:

Did you know that one of the five pre-literacy skills that help foster reading success in the elementary school years is book handling?  Book handling skills include knowing how to hold a book correctly and understanding that reading moves from left to right.  By bringing your toddler to storytime and by reading with your child at home, you are teaching this important skill through example.  Such a simple yet effective way to support school success.

What follows are the books, rhymes, songs, and flannel boards we shared.

BOOKS WE SHARED

Toot Toot Beep Beep! by Emma Garcia is a great book about cars in traffic as they go “up and down, in and out and round and round all day long”.  The cars in this book are diverse, bold and bright and each makes a unique noise – honk, beep, toot, vroom and beep to name a few!  There is also a surprise ending – the cars disappear for the night!  But, where do they go?  You’ll have to read the book to find out.

Red Light, Green Light by Anastasia Suen shows a boy playing with his toy cars, trucks and trains.  It feels like the real thing as we turn the pages and see vehicles moving to and fro and in and out of tunnels; there are red lights flashing and rail cars and traffic signals everywhere!  The little boy’s make believe world of toy cars and trucks truly comes alive in this book!  At the very end we see him with a stoplight and he reminds us that Red means STOP and Green means GO!  A very good lesson to learn for a toddler!

Flannel Boards We Shared

Lots of Cars

There are lots of cars driving down the street (pretend to have a steering wheel)
Tell me what color do you see? (place color car on felt board)
Big cars, little cars (spread arms big and little)
Beep! Beep! Beep! (pinch nose three times)

Go through all the colors  and then end with:

There are lots of cars driving down the street!
Which color car is the biggest you see? (Let children choose the biggest car & place on felt board)
Big cars, little cars (spread arms big and little)
Beep! Beep! Beep! (pinch nose three times)

There are lots of cars driving down the street!
Which color car is the smallest you see? (Let children choose the smallest car & place on the felt board.)
Big cars, little cars (spread arms big and little)
Beep! Beep! Beep! (pinch nose three times)

Green Means Go!

Green says, “Go!” march quickly
Go! Go! Go!
Yellow says, “Slow!” march slowly
Slow…slow…slow
And red says, “Stop!” stop and freeze

Go! Go! Go! march fast
Slow…slow…slow march slowly
and STOP! stop
Repeat
