For today’s storytime we learned about parts of the body. I asked each toddler to point to different parts of a teddy bear’s body on their way in. So they were already practicing the words for ears, eyes, nose, arms, feet, head, etc. even before storytime started!

Books We Shared

Nose to Toes, You are Yummy by Tim Harrington invites kids to identify their body parts with a fun and loving song.

To hear the melody of the song, go here: https://soundcloud.com/harperchildrens/nose-to-toes-you-are-yummy

Whose Toes Are Those? by Sally Symes and illustrated by Nick Sharratt is a fun lift-the-flap guessing book that invites kids to guess the animal by its body parts.

Flannel Boards We Shared

Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?

Oh where, oh where has my little dog gone?
Oh where, oh where can he be?
With his ears cut short and his tail cut long
Oh where, oh where can he be?

Each time we sing the song, I remove one shape to see if my dog is hiding behind it. We compare the animal’s body to the clues in the song. I also prompt the group to sing the words “ears” and “tail” instead of singing them myself.

Five Little Monkeys

(take one monkey away each verse)

Five little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
Mama called the doctor
And the doctor said
No more monkeys jumping on the bed

Four little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped her head
Mama called the doctor
And the doctor said,
No more monkeys jumping on the bed

Three little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
Mama called the doctor
And the doctor said,
No more monkeys jumping on the bed

Two little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped her head
Mama called the doctor
And the doctor said,
No more monkeys jumping on the bed

One little monkey jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
Mama called the doctor
And the doctor said,
No more monkeys jumping on the bed

Letter of the Day

Our Letter of the Day was B! We talked about words that start with B and drew a big B in the air.

Action Songs & Bounces We Shared

Open Shut Them

Open, shut them, open, shut them,
Give a little clap, clap, clap.
Open, shut them, open, shut them,
Place them on your lap, lap, lap.

Creep them, crawl them,
Creep them, crawl them,
Right up to your chin, chin, chin.
Open up your little mouth,
But… do not let them in!!

Flea

On my toe there is a flea
Now he’s climbing on my knee
Past my tummy, past my nose
On my head where my hair grows
On my head there is a flea
Now he’s climbing down on me
Past my tummy, past my knee
On my toe… Take that, you flea!
