For our third storytime of the winter session we read stories about BIRDS!

Stella, our library “baby bird”helped us flap, tweet and sing songs throughout the morning.

AND we even found a nest with eggs that were almost ready to hatch!  By the end of our storytime those eggs turned into some very hungry baby bluebirds.

Never a dull moment at library storytime!  Below are the books, rhymes, songs, tickle, bounces, flannel and finger puppet rhymes we shared.

BOOKS WE SHARED

In Lucy Cousin’s picture book, Hooray for Birds! we see an array of beautifully illustrated birds.  There is a rooster, a woodpecker, a starling, a flamingo, a swan – the list goes on and on!  The simple text and oversized, bold, colorful drawings engage and delight infants and toddlers and brings these birds to life.  This is a great read aloud or lap sit book.

Baby Bird written by Joyce Dunbar and illustrated by Russell Ayto is the perfect book for infants.  We are introduced to a baby bird who desperately wants to leave the nest and fly.  He goes to the edge of the nest and “flap, flap…flap…” – HE FALLS TO THE GROUND!  Oh no!  The remainder of the book has the baby bird running into all sorts of creatures – a bee, frog, cat and dog but he is able to dodge all of them to give flying one more try.  Does he make it?  You’ll need to read the book to find out. (Hint:  It’s a happy ending!)

Flannel & Finger Puppet Rhymes We Shared

Little Miss Muffet

Little miss Muffet she sat on her tuffet, eating her curds eating and whey,
Along came a spider who sat down beside her
And frightened miss Muffet away.

Five Little Blackbirds

*FUN FACT:  You don’t need puppets, just use your fingers for this rhyme!

Five little blackbirds sitting in a tree
One flew away! How many do you see?
One, two, three, four.

Four little blackbirds sitting in a tree
One flew away! How many do you see?
One, two, three.

Three little blackbirds…etc.

There is also a Mother Goose nursery rhyme involving blackbirds.  Click onto the video below to listen to it in song and see if you can try singing or saying it to your baby at home!  (I’ve included the lyrics but be forewarned – this one is not for the feint of heart).

Sing a Song of Sixpence

Sing a song of sixpence,
A pocket full of rye,
Four and twenty blackbirds
Baked in a pie.
When the pie was opened
The birds began to sing—
Wasn’t that a dainty dish
To set before the king?
The king was in the counting-house
Counting out his money,
The queen was in the parlor
Eating bread and honey,
The maid was in the garden
Hanging out the clothes.
Along came a blackbird
And snipped off her nose.

Welcome Song
(to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)

Welcome, welcome everyone,
Now we’re here let’s have some fun!
First we clap our hands just so,
Then we bend and touch our toes.
Welcome, welcome everyone,
Now we’re here let’s have some fun!

Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

Video:  Twinkle Twinkle

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
How I wonder what you are
Up above the world so high
Like a diamond in the sky
Twinkle Twinkle little star
How I wonder what you are.

Dickery Dickery Dare (bounce)

Video:  Dickery Dickery Dare

Dickery dickery dare,
The pig flew up in the air –
Wooooo!
The man in brown,
Brought him back down,
Dickery dickery dare!

The Grand Old Duke of York (bounce)

Video:  The Grand Old Duke of York

Oh, the grand old Duke of York,
He had ten thousand men;
He marched them up to the top of the hill
And he marched them down again.
When they were up, they were up,
And when they were down, they were down,
And when they were only halfway up,
They were neither up nor down.

Peas Porridge Hot! (nursery rhyme)

Video:  Peas Porridge Hot

Peas porridge hot
Peas porridge cold
Peas porridge in the pot, nine days old!
Some like it hot
Some like it cold
Some like it in the pot, nine days old!

Tickle: Round and round the garden, goes the Teddy Bear, a one-step, a two-step, a tickle under there.

Goodbye Friends (song in sign)
