WE read some great stories about chickens in weird places and just plain WEIRD chickens!  Sort of a twist on the chicken at the farm stories!

Here are the books, songs, flannel stories. action rhymes and video we shared.

Books We Read

In Chicken Story Time by Sandy Asher, we find out what happens when a few chickens, and a few more chickens, and a few more chickens wander into the library for storytime!  A funny, tongue-in-cheek look at storytime from the perspective of a librarian at her wit’s end, some eager children and about 100 chickens.

First the Egg by Laura Vaccaro Seeger is a beautifully illustrated, cut out book that teaches children a bit of science about what comes first.  There is the tadpole then the frog, the seed than the flower, the caterpillar than the butterfly and so on.  But with the chicken, is it the chicken than the egg?  Or the egg than the chicken?  A play on words leads to lots of learning and a bit of early critical thinking.

Charlie Chick by Nick Denchfield and Ant Parker is a funny pop up book that explores Charlie’s love for food!  We added this one for the wee babies that slipped into preschool storytime!

Flannel Board We Shared

Windblown (based on the book Windblown by Edouard Manceau)

Who owns the scraps of paper blown by the wind?  Is it the chicken who found the paper?  The fish who cut the paper into scraps?  The bird who made the paper?  The snail who shaped the wood?  Or the frog who found the tree?  Hmmmm…actually, it’s none of those creatures.  The paper belongs to the wind ~ Whoosh!

Welcome, Welcome Everyone
(to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle)

Welcome, welcome everyone,
Now we’re here let’s have some fun!
First we clap our hands just so,
Then we bend and touch our toes.
Welcome, welcome everyone,
Now we’re here let’s have some fun

Open Shut Them – Video:  Open Shut Them

Open, shut them, open, shut them, (open and close hands)
Give a little clap, clap, clap.  (clap three times)
Open shut them, open shut them (open and close hands)
Put them in your lap, lap, lap. (place hands in lap and bounce them 3X)

Creep them, crawl them, creep them crawl them, (crawl fingers up arms)
Right up to your chinny  chin chin. (place fingers on chin)
Open up your little mouth (open mouth and say ahhhhhh)
But do not put them in!! (put hands behind your back)
