Our 6th storytime of the summer session was all about Food!  We also had a visit from Max the Mouse and he ate all of our strawberries!!  I guess mice really do love to eat!  Here are the stories, songs, rhymes, flannel boards, activities and video we explored about our topic.

Books We Shared

   

In The Little Mouse, The Red, Ripe Strawberry and The Big Hungry Bear by Don and Audrey Wood, we see a little mouse picking a beautiful, red, ripe strawberry.  But he gets a warning!  There is also a hungry bear lurking about and he LOVES strawberries too (he can even smell them from miles away).  “Stomp, stomp, stomp” – the bear will tromp through the forest to take that strawberry away from that little mouse.  But there is a way out!  Little mouse can cut the strawberry in two and share it with the narrator.  That would be one red, ripe strawberry the bear won’t get to eat!

Our second book was Lunch by Denise Fleming.  I used flannel board pieces to accompany the story and make it come alive for the children.   (See under “Flannel Boards We Shared”).

“Lunch” is all about a mouse who loves to EAT!  He wakes up soooo hungry that he eats through a turnip, some carrots, an ear of corn, some green peas, berries, grapes, apples and even a big slice of watermelon.  After all that eating, he goes back to bed…UNTIL DINNERTIME!  This is a great book to introduce your child to different types of food.  It is beautifully illustrated but the colors are a bit subdued.  That is why the flannel pieces work so well as a supplement to the story.  Toddlers can see the larger, more colorful pieces which keeps them engaged.

We added a third story to our bag of tricks!  I always try and stretch things a bit as we get beyond the halfway point of our session.  Today is Monday by Eric Carle is a great book to learn about food and the days of the week.  This is a picture book that you can read or “sing” aloud.  I chose to sing the words to keep the toddlers engaged and to add impact to the cumulative effect of the story.  We start with Monday…”Today is Monday, today is Monday…Monday String Beans, all you hungry children, come and eat it up”.  Then we add Tuesday, “Today is Tuesday, today is Tuesday, Tuesday Spaghetti, Monday String Beans, all you hungry children, come and eat it up” – we go through all of the days of the week and conclude with ice cream on Sunday!  The final photograph shows children from all walks of life sitting together to eat.
