Our 6th storytime of the summer session was all about Food!  We also had a visit from Max the Mouse.  I guess mice really do love to eat..at least that is what we learned from the first story we shared.  Here are the books, songs, rhymes, flannel stories and activities we explored about our topic.

Max the Mouse

Books We Shared

We read the book Lunch by Denise Fleming but we also used flannel board pieces to make the story really come alive!  Lunch is all about a mouse who loves to EAT!  He wakes up soooo hungry that he eats through a turnip, some carrots, an ear of corn, some green peas, berries, grapes, apples and even a big slice of watermelon.  After all that eating, he goes back to bed…UNTIL DINNERTIME!  This is a great book to introduce babies to different types of food.  It is beautifully illustrated but the colors are a bit subdued.  That is why the flannel pieces work so well as a supplement to the story.  Infants can see the larger, more colorful pieces which keeps them engaged in the story.

In Guess What? Fruit, Yusuke Yonezu takes us on a guessing game.  Pictures of different fruits turn into animals with lift-the-flaps in this interactive book.  A banana turns into a duck, an orange turns into a horse…it’s magic.  The illustrations are simple making the “animal” surprise that much more effective. Infants learn their fruits AND expand their visual imaginations.

Little Jack Horner

“Little Jack Horner…”
by Mother Goose

Little Jack Horner
Sat in a corner,
Eating his Christmas pie. (we replaced Christmas with Pudding)
He put in his thumb,
And he pulled out a plum,
And said, “What a good boy am I!”

Rhymes & Bounces & Songs We Shared

We sing a lot of songs during storytime!  You’ll find lyrics to those songs without music here.

Welcome Song
(to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)

Welcome, welcome everyone
Now we’re here, let’s have some fun!
First we clap our hands just so
Then we bend and touch our toes
Welcome, welcome everyone
Now we’re here, let’s have some fun!

Dickery Dickery Dare (bounce)
(to the tune of Hickory Dickory Dock)

Dickery dickery dare,
The pig flew up in the air, (woo!)
The man in brown, brought him back down,

Grand Old Duke of York (bounce)

The grand old Duke of York
He had 10,000 men
He marched them up to the top of the hill (lift baby up)
And he marched them back again (place baby on lap)
And when they’re up, they’re up  (lift baby up)
And when they’re down, they’re down (place baby on lap)
But when they’re only half way up (bring baby halfway up)
They’re neither up nor down! (lift baby up and down)

You are My Sunshine (song)

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You’ll never know dear, how much I love you
And I love you more every day…

Round and Round the Garden (tickle)

Round and round the garden, goes the teddy bear, a one step, a two step, a tickle under there!
