Today’s storytime for preschoolers was all about chickens!

Books We Shared

In Stuck in the Mud by Jane Clarke with illustrations by Garry Parsons, Mama Hen comes out to see that one of her chicks is missing!  After looking around, she finds he’s stuck in the mud, and when she tries to push and pull him out – she gets stuck too!  It’s time for all the animals to pitch in and see if they can save the chick.  We had fun with this one — especially the surprise ending!

Our next book was about exactly what we were doing — chicken storytime!  Ok, well, not EXACTLY.  Because in Chicken Story Time by Sandy Asher, illustrated by Mark Fearing, an actual chicken sees that the library has storytime, and wants to come listen.  Soon all of her chicken friends want to join in.  How will the librarian keep things under control?  We only had humans in our storytime today, so thankfully THIS librarian didn’t have that issue.

Flannelboard Story

For our flannelboard, we did a rhyme that you can do on your hands too!

5 Eggs and 5 Eggs

Five eggs and five eggs (hold up five fingers on one hand, then on the other)
that makes ten.
Sitting on top is a mother hen. (clutch one hand into a fist, place the fist on top of it)
Crackle! Crackle! Crackle! (clap each time you say Crackle!)
What do I see? (hold hands out in question)
Ten yellow chicks, as fluffy as can be. (hold up 10 fingers and wiggle them)

Movements

We pretended to be chickens today while we sang this song:

If You’re a Chicken and You Know It
(to the tune of “If You’re Happy and You Know It”)

If you’re a chicken and you know it flap your wings: FLAP! FLAP! (put hands near armpits to make your arms into “wings” and move your elbows up and down to flap)
If you’re a chicken and you know it flap your wings: FLAP! FLAP!
If you’re a chicken and you know it, and you really want to show it
If you’re a chicken and you know it flap your wings: FLAP! FLAP!

Other Verses:
…fly up high (jump up and down)
…scratch your feet (slide one foot back, then the other)
…say bok bok (say Bok! Bok!)

Film We Watched

“The Red Hen” from 20 Stories for Spring. Based on the book by Rebecca Emberley and Ed Emberley.

The Red Hen and her chicks work all day all alone to bake a cake.  But when it comes time to eat it, who will help?
