Our third storytime of the summer session was all about Bears!  Here are the books, songs, rhymes, flannel stories and video we shared for our storytime on Bears!

In Nancy Tafuri’s book, Mama’s Little Bears, we are introduced to Mama Bear and her three baby bears.  They are all out fishing on a spring day until the three baby bears run off to explore!  They wonder what’s over the hill, what’s under the rock, what’s in the cave, what’s down in the log and what’s up in the tree.  They find all sorts of creatures but they don’t scurry away until they disturb a family of owls.  As they hurry down the tree, they look for their Mama but can’t see her!  Where is she?  A sweet story about the need for babies to explore on their own but only if Mama is within eyesight.  Clear, bold illustrations and simple text make this the perfect book for infants and toddlers.

Orange Pear Apple Bear by Emily Gravett is one of my favorite books to share for storytime.  It is deceptively simple – there’s your brown bear, a green pear, an “orange” orange and a red apple.  See what happens when the rhyming cadence mixes all of these elements up so that you see an orange bear, an orange pear, an apple bear…well you get the picture.  Of course we all know bears get HUNGRY and the story ends with bear eating the orange, the apple and the pear…”There!”  The rhyming text is marvelous, the illustrations soft and sweet and the ending too perfect!

10 Little Teddy Bears Sleeping in the Bed

“Ten Teddy Bears Sleeping in the Bed”
Ten little teddy bears sleeping in the bed,
Five at the foot and five at the head.
One little teddy said, “This bed is TOO full!”
So he grabbed the blanket and started to pull.
He pulled and he pulled and he pulled some more,
Until two little teddies went BOOM to the floor!
(Make pulling motions with PULL and clap with the BOOM)

(Count down until…)

One little teddy bear sleeping in the bed,
Zero at the foot and one at the head.
This little teddy said, “This is not right!
I don’t want to sleep alone tonight!”

So…
One little teddy bear sleeping in the bed,
Zero at the foot and one at the head.
This teddy said, “This bed is NOT full!”
So he put out his paw and started to pull.
He pulled and he pulled and he pulled some more,
Until four little teddies climbed up from the floor!

Ten little teddy bears sleeping in the bed,
Five at the foot and five at the head.
One little teddy said, “This is JUST right!”
So ten little teddy bears said, “Good Night!”
