This week is National Library Week!  We celebrated it in our Infant and Toddler Storytimes yesterday by sharing stories and rhymes all about books, reading and libraries!

Books We Shared

My Book Box by Hillenbrandi like books by browneBook by GeorgeLola Loves Stories by McQuinnBooks Always Everywhere by Blatt
Don’t you wish you had books with you all the time?  Well, with the clever idea presented in our first book for infant storytime, My Book Box by Will Hillenbrand, now you can!  There’s a lot of things you can do with a box, but turning it into a book box means adventure is always around the corner!  The second book we shared, pulled from my book bag, celebrates books of all types – I Like Books by Anthony Browne.

Like the monkey in I Like Books, it’s hard for me to choose from so many great options for storytime!  So, for the 10am storytime I shared Book! by Kristine O’Connell George, illustrated by Maggie Smith.  This is the adorable story of a child who gets a present (a book!), and then celebrates all the things he can do with it – share it, wear it, nap with it, and read it!  For 11am, I read Lola Loves Stories by Anna McQuinn, illustrated by Rosalind Beardshaw.  In it, Lola visits the library with her dad every Saturday, and then spends the rest of the week playing out the stories in the books they share at home.  It’s an adorable celebration of sharing stories, imagination and family.  In both Toddler storytimes we read Books Always Everywhere by Jane Blatt, illustrated by Sarah Massini, which highlights that books are great anytime, anywhere!

Flannelboard Stories

Infant Storytime: Five Little Books
5 Little Books cropped

(Rhyme taken from Toddle on Over by Robin Works Davis)

Five little books, sitting on a shelf.
Look inside, and see a little elf.
Four little books, all in a row.
Look inside, and see it start to snow.
Three little books, still on the shelf.
Can you take one, and read it to yourself?
Two little books, left on the pile.
Find one now, and read it with a smile.
One little book, all that is there.
Found itself a reader, who was happy to share.

Toddler Storytime: Wiggleworm, Wiggleworm
Wiggleworm Wiggleworm Flannelboard cropped
(Pattern and story taken from itsybitsymom)

Hide the worm behind one of the books before you start.  Then say this rhyme:

Wiggleworm, wiggleworm, hiding in a book.
Wiggleworm, wiggleworm, where should we look?

Then ask for the color of the book and look under to see if the worm is there!

Nursery Rhyme we Shared in Infant Storytime

Oh no, poor Little Bo Peep!

Template and Rhyme from Mother Goose’s Playhouse by Judy Sierra

Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep
And doesn’t know where to find them.
Leave them alone
And they’ll come home
Wagging their tails behind them.

Pippa is tired of hearing the same old stories.  Maybe a trip to the library will help!

 Rhymes We Shared

We had a lot of fun doing action rhymes at storytime!

INFANT STORYTIME

Peek a Boo
(to tune of Frere Jacques)
Peek-a-boo, Peek-a-boo (play peek-a-boo)
I see you, I see you (point at baby)
I see your little nose  (touch baby’s nose)
I see your tiny toes (touch baby’s toes)
Peek-a-boo.  Peek-a-boo. (play peek-a-boo again)

To Market, To Market
(Bounce baby on lap as you recite the rhyme)
To market to market to buy a fat pig
Home again, home again jiggity jig.
To market, to market to buy a fat hog
Home again, home again jiggity jog.
To market, to market to buy a plum bun
Home again, home again market is done.

Round and Round the Garden
Round and round the garden (circle finger around baby’s bellybutton)
Goes the teddy bear
A one step, a two step, (move fingers up the chest)
A tickle-y under there. (tickle under the chin)
