THERE’S A MONSTER IN THE LIBRARY but we’re NOT AFRAID!
We had some monstrous fun during our Toddler Storytime.
For a printable list of the songs & action rhymes we shared (including lyrics), click here: TODDLER – Songs-Rhymes
Below are some of the stories and activities we explored:
OPENING SONGS:
Welcome Everyone!
Clap Everybody and Say Hello!
ACTION RHYME:
Open, Shut Them
OUR BOOKS:
Go Away, Big Green Monster by Ed Emberley
We start with “two big yellow eyes, a long, bluish-greenish nose…” and continue to add features until we have one big scary monster!
Not to worry, when he gets out of hand, we just begin taking away his features one by one…
This book, illustrated by Caldeocott Award-winning illustrator, Ed Emberley, uses
the diecut technique to construct AND deconstruct the green monster in the story.
The toddlers were mesmerized by the colors, the shapes & the suspense.
MOVEMENT SONG:
Roll Your Hands
That’s Not My Monster…by Fiona Watt
This is a great board book for helping toddlers develop sensory and language awareness.
Of course at the end we discover the final monster with fluffy ears is our monster – who can resist
fluffy ears on a monster anyway? The children loved this book and sat quietly as I turned each page.
FLANNEL BOARD STORY
Five Monsters in the Bed
There were 5 (monsters) in the bed…
There were five in the bed and the little monster said,
“Move over, move over…”
So they all moved over and one fell out!
OUCH – ROAR!
Repeat until there is only one monster left…then sing…
There was one in the bed and this monster said,
“I’m lonely, I’m lonely.”
So he called all his friends and they all came back!
1, 2, 3, 4 5!!!
There were five in the bed and they all just said,
“Night night now…night night now.”
Then they all rolled over and they turned out the light…(click)
We had fun with our flannel monster puppet.
The eyes, ears, mouth, nose and hair are all re-moveable, making this a great prop for re-telling Ed Emberley’s story to toddlers.
We start with just the monster’s green face..then begin adding parts one at a time:
Big Green Monster has a big, scary green face,
Two big yellow eyes, (add eyes)
a long, bluish-green nose, (add nose)
Two little squiggly ears, (add ears)
Scraggly purple hair (add hair)
and a big, red mouth with sharp white teeth… (add mouth)
BUT
You’re just a PUPPET!
And you don’t scare us!!!! So…
GO AWAY, scraggly purple hair, (remove hair)
GO AWAY, two little squiggly ears, (remove ears)
GO AWAY, long bluish-green nose, (remove nose)
GO AWAY big yellow eyes, (remove eyes)
GO AWAY big, red mouth with those sharp white teeth (remove mouth)
GO AWAY, big scary green face, (turn hand mitt around to show black side)
AND DON’T COME BACK
Until I say so.
