Yes, I know it’s not springtime, but bunnies are cute and fun all year long! Today we opened our storytime with the song “Clap Your Hands” from the Wiggleworms Love You album, and then talked about things that begin with the letter B:
Then we read a book called Big Bad Bunny by Franny Billingsley and illustrated by G. Brian Karas. (Spoiler: the Big Bad Bunny isn’t quite so big or bad after all… And maybe not really even a bunny!)
We did the traditional children’s song “Little Peter Rabbit,” in which you constantly strip nouns away until you’re left with something almost unintelligible! We used felt words for help and visual cues.

We read a book with the help of my friend Duck, called Duck! Rabbit! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld. This is a storytime FAVORITE–especially with the added humor of the Duck puppet angrily arguing his case for why the picture is showing a duck! I usually get all the kids on “my” side arguing for why it’s a rabbit. They like telling the Duck puppet he’s wrong. 🙂
We followed that with a song to get all our sillies out. We sang “Jump Up Turn Around” from the CD Jim Gill Sings Moving Rhymes for Modern Times. Then we did a counting felt board activity, counting up to ten carrots and counting back down again as our bunny rabbit puppet took them away. We sang to the tune of “Ten Little Fingers” or sometimes known as “Ten Little Indians”:
One little, two little, three little carrots
Four little, five little, six little carrots
Seven little, eight little, nine little carrots
Ten little carrots for my bunny!
Our last book was Bunnies!!! by Kevan Atteberry. It’s a cute book about a monster who loves bunnies but just keeps scaring them away with his excited roars.
We sang some songs with our song cube,
and then watched a video about two loveable bunnies, Max and Ruby. We saw the episode “Max’s Rabbit Racer” on the DVD Afternoons with Max and Ruby. This one is not available for check out, but we have lots of wonderful Max and Ruby videos here, and of course the books by Rosemary Wells here!
