In storytime today we were thankful for food, fun and friends!

Books We Shared

Over the River and Through the Wood by Child pictures by Westcott
We started Infant storytime off by reading Thanks for Thanksgiving by Julie Markes, illustrated by Doris Barrette.  This is a lovely celebration of being thankful for the simple joys around you.  Next, we read/sang Over the River and Through the Wood by Lydia Maria Child, illustrated by Nadine Bernard Westcott.  While lots of other holidays have songs to celebrate them, this is the only one I know for Thanksgiving.

In 10 am Toddler storytime we read about two of the best parts of Thanksgiving – food and sharing — with All for Pie, Pie for All by David Martin, illustrated by Valeri Gorbachev.  Finally we got a little silly with thankfulness with Todd Parr’s brightly colored The Thankful Book.  Things were switched up a bit at the 11 am toddler storytime where we read The Thankful Book and Over the River and Through the Wood.

Flannelboard Story

Turkey Feathers

Pattern from Felt Board Fingerplays by Liz and Dick Wilmes
Song from Everything Preschool

Here’s a turkey.
But he’s missing something!  What is he missing?
Feathers!
What color is this feather? (Bring out the red feather)
Red!  That’s right!  Let’s put it on the turkey.  (Place the feather on the turkey.)

(now sing, to tune of Mary Wore Her Red Dress)
Turkey wore his red feather, red feather, red feather.
Turkey wore his red feather all day long.

(Continue adding color feathers and singing)

Let’s see, what color feathers does turkey have?  (rename all the colors)
And what does that make?
A rainbow!

You could make this out of construction paper and play at home, or do something similar as your child makes a hand turkey!

Nursery Rhyme

This Little Piggy

This little piggy went to market.
This little piggy stayed home.
This little piggy had roast beef.
This little piggy had none.
And this little piggy went wee! wee! wee!
All the way home.
