We hope you have plans to eat well in the company of friends and loved ones, and that you have plenty of both food and family to enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>This week, we wanted to share PPL staff picks for dishes and foods they look forward to at Thanksgiving, as well as their favorite books, movies, and music for the long holiday weekend. Many of the dishes here are familiar traditions for American Thanksgiving, but not all of them! If you have a pairing \u00a0(food and fun) that you&#8217;d like to recommend, please share it here!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update to add: <\/strong>We first shared this post in 2016; we&#8217;ve added some updates, and in the coming years, we hope to add suggestions from staff who weren&#8217;t part of the team yet 7 years ago. day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It pairs nicely with <a href=\"https:\/\/pasadena.ent.sirsi.net\/client\/en_US\/default\/search\/detailnonmodal\/ent:$002f$002fSD_ILS$002f0$002fSD_ILS:234427\/one\"><strong><em>Thanksgiving at the Tappletons&#8217;<\/em> by Eileen Spinelli<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Thanksgiving is always a big deal at the Tappletons, but this year, everything goes wrong.\u00a0 And when all the food goes wrong, the Tappletons still find meaning in the holiday, and a great meal.\u00a0 If only they had had some jellied cranberry sauce in the cupboard, tasting just like it should.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And if you need something to read with by 2 different staff, so you know this one&#8217;s probably pretty good!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;15 minutes on the stove and 2-3 days in the fridge\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<em>Brigida<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This recipe comes from the mother of\u00a0<em>Los Angeles Times<\/em> food writer Russ Parson, and I discovered it about 10 years ago; I&#8217;ve been making it ever since! Even my family members who don&#8217;t like cranberries like this version. We go out to eat on Thanksgiving, but I still make at least a triple batch of this delicious, spiced cranberry side, and bring two containers to hand off for\u00a0family to take home and enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One adaptation I&#8217;ve made: I tie up the allspice and cloves in little garni bags (use a small square of cheesecloth and kitchen twine), so they are easy to find and remove right before serving. It\u2019s a yearly tradition. It\u2019s irreverent and crass (just like Cousin Eddie)! All measurements in this recipe are approximations. Do what feels right to you!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 1 pound Brussels sprouts (or the right amount to make a side dish for four people)<br \/>\nSplash of olive oil\/maybe 1-2 tablespoons (just enough to lightly coat the Brussels sprouts)<br \/>\nSome salt (a few shakes of your salt shaker over the sprouts)<br \/>\n2-3 spoonfuls of brown sugar (enough to lightly coat the oiled sprouts)<br \/>\n3 slices of bacon diced into small pieces (or more if you want more!)<\/p>\n<p>Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.<br \/>\nTrim the ends of the Brussels sprouts and cut the sprouts in half.<br \/>\nToss Brussels sprouts in a bowl with olive oil, salt, and brown sugar.<br \/>\nDice the bacon into small pieces.<br \/>\nCover a baking tray with tin foil.<br \/>\nSpread the Brussels sprouts over the tray and sprinkle the diced bacon on top.<br \/>\nPop into the oven and remove when done. I usually set my timer for 20 minutes and see what they look like, then keep going until they\u2019re done, usually around 30 minutes. The baking time is done before the Brussels sprouts get mushy, but when the bacon is cooked enough. It\u2019s a balancing act.<br \/>\nEnjoy!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;<\/strong><\/em>I think the holidays are a great time for some escapist fun reading and<em><strong>\u00a0The Hating Game\u00a0by<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0Sally Thorne\u00a0<\/strong>is all kinds of fun. I don\u2019t do a ton of contemporary romances, but I\u2019m a sucker for the enemies with chemistry trope and Sally Thorne writes some great snappy dialogue between these two workplace enemies. Reading this book felt like watching a romantic comedy, which is sometimes just what the holidays call for.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<em>Illyanna<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pasadena.ent.sirsi.net\/client\/en_US\/default\/search\/detailnonmodal\/ent:$002f$002fSD_ILS$002f0$002fSD_ILS:407582\/one\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/secure.syndetics.com\/index.aspx?type=xw12&amp;client=pasap&amp;upc=&amp;oclc=&amp;isbn=9786318674317&amp;issn=\/LC.JPG\" alt=\"DVD Cover image of The Hating Game\" width=\"179\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a>Update:\u00a0<\/strong>While it looks like we may not currently carry the book, you can still try pairing this recipe with the film adaptation of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pasadena.ent.sirsi.net\/client\/en_US\/default\/search\/detailnonmodal\/ent:$002f$002fSD_ILS$002f0$002fSD_ILS:407582\/one\"><strong><em>The Hating Game<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, which is available for checkout in DVD!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Sweet Potato, Apple &amp; Onion Gratin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;(\u2026based on a food.com recipe that was based on a 1991 recipe from Bon Appetit magazine)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Feeds 6-10 and is easily made with swapped out\/on-hand ingredients. You can change up the apple type, onion type, stock\/broth type, cheese and even breadcrumb add-ins (nuts, herbs, ???) with no real problem. You can also make more in a larger container and cover it &amp; just cook it longer to soften without it really risking getting burnt\/overcooked.<\/p>\n<p>1 lb sweet potato (yam, whatever\u2026red ones), peeled and sliced 1\/4 inch thick<br \/>\n2 Tablespoons butter<br \/>\n1 lb yellow onion, thinly sliced<br \/>\n3\u20444 lb Fuji apples, peeled, cored, &amp; thinly sliced<br \/>\n3 Tablespoons flour<br \/>\n1\u20442 cup vegetable stock\/broth<br \/>\n3\u20444 cup fresh breadcrumbs (I remove crust from 2-3 slices of bread, cut into 1 inch pieces and bake at 350 for 15mins\u2026remove and crumble up when cooled)<br \/>\n\u00bd Cup shredded sharp cheddar (use more or less of whatever melty cheese you like\u2026.or use none)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.<br \/>\nButter \u00a0a 13-X-6-inch oval (or fairly comparable in size) baking dish.<br \/>\nMelt butter in a large heavy skillet (if you have a cast iron skillet go for that) over medium heat.<br \/>\nAdd onions and saut\u00e9 until tender, about 10 minutes.<br \/>\nPut apple slices in a medium bowl, sprinkle in flour, toss those around until the apples are coated.<br \/>\nArrange about \u00bc of the sweet potatoes in bottom of the prepared dish.<br \/>\nTop with \u00bc of the apple slices.<br \/>\nRepeat until they\u2019re all layered over and over like that in the dish.<br \/>\nTop with the saut\u00e9ed onions, spreading around to cover the whole top.<br \/>\nPour the broth\/stock all over the top (I go around the outside edge then fill in to the center).<br \/>\nBake long enough that the sweet potatoes get tender (about 45 minutes).<br \/>\nMix breadcrumbs, cheese and whatever else you want to add and sprinkle the mixture over potatoes.<br \/>\nBake an additional 20 minutes.<br \/>\nLet cool 5 minutes before serving.<br \/>\nIf you want a crispier browned top you can broil for 5 minutes (but I can never be bothered to do
